but tar is wimpy use xz or summit lol
I do use xz. I have a script that tars all files in a directory and then compresses them using all 16 threads (can compress at about 21mb/s)

pree sure the normal compression algorithms arent compatible with the tape features, like updating one file/adding without having to recompress the others
unless you piped compressed files into the tar i guess
