If you guys really want me to give the ramble on level design in games now: open world, close world, side scroller, etc. I could do that after work tomorrow.

my god yes, PS Home was straight cancer whenever i went on it so it wouldn’t even be surprised.

PSN home has sooo much potential. Long wait times and high prices really killed it off.

ye i mean it had some pretty decent games if you ever managed to do them. remember playing bowling on it for ages with my brother and stuff and some kart racing thing too. they really did try and support it but it wasn’t to be in the end.

Speaking of cancer and PS, I thought the Folding@home feature pretty neat until they ended it.

yep it was, used to leave my PlayStation on folding sometimes, iirc had some neat graphical map thing showing you statistics and stuff which was cool. Would be interesting if Sony or Microsoft will ever bring this to newer consoles, could be great on the newer Pro and XBone X consoles.

I wouldn’t even be totally surprised if the stipulation to not disassemble the card was directed specifically at Gamers Nexus as there known for this kind of thing and iirc Nvidia weren’t too happy about them disassembling and showing off that EVGA card on an earlier video at Gamescom.

Those unboxings are annoying. Stuff like that is the reason why I’m not subscribed to 4/5 of the channels in the image.

Project Space Report:
Work on Chapter 3 is going well.

end report.

The long ramble on level design will be separate from this post. It’ll be a bit before I post it but it will be kinda soonish.

Alright. So. I took a vacation with my brother, our cousins, and a few of our buddies. The plan was to go to this house in the outer banks for the whole week:

We made a stop in Atlantic City on the way down for 1 night, where my cousins, my brother, and I got a room at the Borgata (nicest place in AC). We hit some clubs, bars, etc. I won $20 at the blackjack table (only played with $70 and only a few hands).

The next day we went down to OBX and got all set up in the house. We went through about 2 30/24 packs the first night, and about 4 the next day. Played a lot of pool, went swimming, did some touch football on the beach, spent a good amount of time in the hot tub, and I had a cigar.

Monday night we had the cops called for a noise complaint. The cop that showed up was actually quite hot, but she showed up after most of the pool furniture had been tossed in the pool. We had 1 table floating upside down fully stocked with liquor and beers lol. And there was a pipe on the ground just laying in the open, thankfully she missed it.

Tuesday is when the mandatory evacuation went into effect, so we had to find a new spot to go and we settled on Philly since it’s on the way home. We got there Tuesday night and it’s this little janky-ass air bnb place right around the corner of South St in center city.

hopefully that link works… the pictures make it look much bigger than it actually is. You can maybe get 4 people width-wise in this place comfortably in its wider spots. The pictures also conveniently miss the “stairs” up to the 3rd floor bedroom where my brother and I stayed. Honestly a ladder would’ve been a better solution than whatever the hell you call those things.

Other than that, we did a bunch of drinking, had a few cheeseteaks (Geno’s was by far the best, no comparison), I had another cigar, and we hit most bars on South st and a few others around the city. I quite like the Brauhaus Shmitz. We went there for happy hour where they offer .5L drafts for $4 and these awesome sausage sandwiches. Huge variety of sausage, and they top it with some sauerkraut and great mustard.

Last night, though, most of us were out on south st at a bar watching the football game when we get a call. Our buddy who set up the airbnb booked the wrong dates! We had been there since Tuesday night when we weren’t even supposed to be there. Luckily we got it sorted out, we just had to be out really early this morning. Now my cousin is trying to throw a kegger tonight at his place, but, I need a break lol.

The Ramble of sorts on Level Design by Wolfleben
I thought about making this longer but I decided to just focus on one thing:

Open World - … the danger of all games becoming nothing but open world

Syndrome said it well "“when everyone is super… no one will be.” Ubisoft open world games are all the same now just pick your flavor. The thing is these open world games if they aren’t done well and you take just a surface look at them, then you will see just how hallow they really are. Look no further than the Division:
The people at the Base of Operations all stay at the same point and repeat themselves…
The story is poorly presented
The progress you make in the story has no impact on the game world.

When did the push to open world start? It is a bit hard to pin that down. Bethesda does make some good open world games that are worth exploring. Granted the main stories aren’t the best. However the modding community makes those games highly replaying and some of the overhaul mods like Enderal make them great. Enderal is an open world mod and it is very good.

The problem a lot publisher don’t understand is:

Story and Immersion Matter

Even if the stories for Bethesda Fallout and Elder Scrolls aren’t always the best, there worlds are immersive. If all a publisher does is make a large level fill it with busy work and a loose story they have failed. People will not go back to play a game like that nor remember it. You know what games I remember playing this year:
Hellblade, Prey, Wolfenstein The New Colossus, and Dishonored II. Each of these games have story and are immersive. These are games I will remember years from now. The Division not so much or ever.

End of ramble.

I think your being too harsh on this point because its a mmo style of game. Ive never seen this done in a online game beyond the concept of expansions where everyone changes at once.

Thats a problem of ubisoft and even modern video game culture. Its all just a rinse and repeat of the same game, same story, and sometimes even the same world. Some people do it well like the just cause series. Mostly because you dont play just cause for the story. Its a good story but not something to blow your socks off.

even bethesda has gotten really shit at open world. The level between official skyrim and what some of the modders have done is a pretty massive difference. Not only in how you interact with the world but how well you can project your personal bias onto the world.

TL;DR The problem runs deep and game worlds have lost the ability to have personal bias casted onto them.

Didn’t Ubisoft do that with Far Cry Primal where they used the same map as in FC4?

Yeah. MMO Lights it is pretty normal. Though I harped on the Division. I do give credit they did turn it from a terrible experience to this is actual okay to play and it does reward you for your time.
