also yes

Yep funny how YouTube is getting worse while Twitch grows. I do think Twitches model is much better than YouTube. they are being paid more or less directly by viewers and don’t have to rely on ads which is more sustainable for the platform and streamer as they don’t have to pander to advertisers.

youtube pretty much pays for itself with google ads at this point

Yep is great for Google not so much for creators especially since they just cut a ton of them :frowning:

i honestly think youtube should take away ads entirely and add a builtin patreon thing where they take 10-15% off the top. The 10-15% would be used to absorb the transaction fees which means that small amounts actually mean something to the creator besides a thank you. This solves the whole issue of ad apocalypse and ad blocker since there are no ads to block. This also removes the need for “advertiser” friendly content since there is no ads to begin with.

But all of that makes sense so it will never happen.

Sadly yes, Almost every youtube channel now has a Patreon so would make perfect sense to bake that feature into the platform but google is pretty much an ad company so this would never happen and if it did we’d still probably have ads. iirc isn’t Floatplans model more similar to that?

no. the floatplane model is that you pay a certain amount for access to a specific creators content. If you wanna watch both bitwit and LTT content on floatplane then you have to pay $3 to each creator

ah right so its more like a subscription service instead of “donating” to creators for extra stuff?

yep. in this case the early access stuff is the extra stuff

That isn’t a bad model, my only problem with something like that would be if I followed a lot of people on the platform. those costs could really add up but if the incentive was early access and I got the content anyway it isn’t so bad.

the cost is what will hurt floatplane the most when it gets fairly large

yea you mean whether it would be as sustainable at a larger volume as subscriptions may not account for running costs?

no. the fact that subsribing to 10 people will be atleast 30$

Yes, $30 a month is very steep for something like this. maybe it wouldn’t be so bad if they offered a discount for the more people you subscribe to?

they’ve actually talked about that but the problems were splitting the money up equally and not every content creator would want that

Yes can see that being a problem. only way I can see it working is if the discount comes from Floatplanes cut but that isn’t so great for them. They have to come up with something for this as its probably the major issue most will have with the platform.
