Current statistics state it’s 70 Nvidia 30 amd of new sales
Market share is determined by sales during a fiscal year not user base
I don’t put too much stock into the steams surveys… because china.
It kind of is… with only 2 competitors in the market that’s clear market domination at the very least. Not to mention the marketing is super effective, and the typical consumer isn’t as discerning as the people I (and I assume most of you) associate with.
Consumer behavior and marketing is some pretty interesting stuff.
Edit:
Also last year was when the mining craze really kicked into gear… so I imagine those sales figures will be much more in Nvidia’s favor for this year unless the crypto market goes wild again.
It’s a duopoly, as long as AMD remains competitive it will stay so. Mining does make it hard to determine true market share as who ever has the greater production capacity will naturally have a market share proportional to the relative production difference in perfectly competitive segments which the low and mid tier GPUs are currently.
Do those include professional/enterprise GPUs too?
And how has mining manipulated the market? Would those who bought a 480/580 and sold it for a high price to buy a 1070/1080 instead also have bought Nvidia GPUs if the market didn’t change like it did?
yes, unless the sales report is broken up by market segment.
It depends if they bought the card in different fiscal periods it would skew toward Nvidia.
edit: I did some math and if someone bought a AMD card and sold it to by a Nvidia card ( in the same fiscal period), AMDs market share would actually increase ( assuming that the overall sales in the market is increasing one to one). But for it to amount to just 1% increase in market share, over 1,000,000 people would need to sell their AMD cards, roughly 10% of all AMD cards sold in 2016 or a 6.25% increase in the size of the market, so it still doesn’t really change market because this kind of sale increase in unrealistic. However if AMD GPU sale were to remain constant then Nvidia market share would increase, this case is unlikely given the effect of mining on the GPU market. All my calculations were based of sales numbers from Q2 2016.
There are no perfectly competitive segments. There are features on both sides which people will gravitate towards (as well as the rest of the P’s of marketing).
Perfectly competitive would be going down to the local farmer’s market looking to buy a dozen beefsteak tomatoes. They’re all essentially the same, and there are many different vendors, resulting in a high supply. Because of this, the only factor for the consumer is price. The vendor cannot raise the price to much higher than the rest of the competition because then nobody would be buying.
It’s also a common misconception that in the event of a monopoly the company will raise the price to whatever they please. The only time this has the potential of being the case is when the product is necessary rather than luxury. GPUs are a luxury product, therefore, in the event one gains full control (totally illegal under the current law btw) the company will raise price until it reaches the optimal point in the price curve on the supply/demand graph.
true, but the marketing aspect is a form of competition. granted it closer to monopolistic competition, but that has the same market outcome as perfect competition.
game cards are, professional card are not.
so i just did a walkout at my school
Hence the massive price difference between your gtx and quadro or rx and firepro
market price 101 right there
Pooping time?
a form of peaceful protest where students leave the class to protest something. In this case it was protesting the inaction from the florida shooting
Glad I’m done with school… I can’t imagine what sort of cushioned, safe-space hell these kids are coddled in. Real life hits a lot of kids like:
(disregard the superimposed words)
And I fear it’s only going to get worse.
there is a fair few people who are fairly aware. More are political than previous years
The fact that most people don’t even know how to do taxes leaving HS says a lot lol
That’s just the beginning
thats more on the education. My high school does not even offer any real classes how todo taxes lol
We didn’t even have home ec.
