The Lounge 0001 [From the Beginning]

I know I’m just laying it off until something big happens and I’m going to hate myself for it. But…I just don’t feel comfortable yet building/using one. Especially when there might be a chunk of money to spend soon (be it RAM, a CPU, a mobo, whatever caused and might cause the bluescreen in the future).

Some ext. enclosures would probably be a start so I can pull the HDDs with media on out and use them with my laptop while the desktop PC is not accessible.

edit: Decided to do the Memtest tomorrow as I seem to have run out of unused (as in: not any linux/windows iso on it) USB thumb drives. Ordered 2x 16GB ones for ~14€ total and they should arrive tomorrow. By then I should’ve prepared one of my ext. backup drives for a temporary media drive to use with my laptop while the desktop isn’t usable.

btw, this should have nothing to do with my RAM not being on the list for compatible RAM for my mobo, right?
kinda unnecessarily thinking 5 steps ahead again and making plans about buying a new mobo+RAM (and maybe a new CPU) in case it IS the memory acting up. cause I can’t find any RAM kits from the compatibility list from Gigabyte’s site (which also seems to be outdated).

edit: it’s weird. it’s not on Gigabyte’s list but according to Crucial my kit is supported on the X370 Gaming 5.

edit2: nah, it’s fine. it’s on the list, but only the grey version is listed -_- fucking stupid bloody cunts, get your listing shit together…

edit3: no, it’s not. only the 1x 16GB stick is on the list, none of the 2x 8GB kits -_- pieces of shit what fucking difference does it make if it’s the same fucking flash chips but on 2 sticks not 1…I don’t even…
but then again, Crucial lists it as supported, while Gigabyte doesn’t. who’s to believe?

fuck it. I’m gonna go to the store to buy some tobacco and then go to bed -_-

Screw it, I’m gonna use the Ubuntu Budgie stick for memtest and let it run while I sleep…however long that may be, probably ~8-9h if the assholes upstairs don’t behave like braindead monkeys on speed again.

Available entertainment should suffice for the time the memtest is running. if not then this is a sign that I should take care of that in the future (dedicated HDD for media that I can plug into my laptop, etc) but this might be a good chance to try out Amazon Prime Video on my tablet.

I’ll report back when I get up. In case something happens to my PC that renders it unbootable I can still access the forum with my tablet, phone and laptop (the latter is probably the best way cause writing on a touchdisplay still sucks).

With that I sign off for now.

Neat. 2400G but in a laptop (2800H).
2600H seems to be a 2500u upgrade/update.

Memtest report 1: 9h20m and 11 passes in, no errors so far.

And damn, i didn’t know one pass would take so long. Set the number of passes to 100 :joy:

Logbook entry Nr. unknown
Date: also unknown

Time has lost its meaning to me. I don’t know how long this has been going on now (oh, wait, it says 10h30m on there). All I know is that I can’t take this much longer.
The I/O ports are few and the keys that transfer my words to these empty pages are dark. My ears are aching as my DAC/Amp won’t play nice with the laptop (or vice versa).
The storage is barren, only small crumbs are left of the once great supplies.

I want my desktop back! :sob:

Chapter 3 is going well. The work is going well. At the point of it got more worse but there is a very small glimmer of chance things will get better. They technically will but not for several chapters.

12h40m
14 passes and luckily no errors

Using my laptop now makes me realize it’s by no means a proper replacement for my desktop.
Way too little storage (only a 250GB SSD in it with 160GB free but that fills up really quick). I could - in theory - add 2 more SSDs (1x 2.5" SATA in the ODD bay with a caddy, 1x SATA m.2 as the m.2 slot doesn’t support PCIe).

Using the keyboard in the dark sucks a bit. I can write mostly blind on it but when I’m looking for a key it makes me wish it had backlight. And the Fn keys don’t work properly with linux. Never have since I had it. Vol+/- doesn’t do steps but keeps the button “pressed”.

The IO is weak. Sure, I can hook up 2 displays via HDMI and VGA but only 4x USB (2x 2.0, 2x 3.0) is barely enough. Right now I’m only using it as is with just a wireless mouse (cause trackpads are bad, mkay).

Good thing I upgraded the RAM, though. 4GB would’ve been abysmal.

Multitasking is at least better than on a tablet. Can’t even watch a video and read at the same time on those things.

For now I’m watching the first season of My Name is Earl and see how long it takes until I can’t wait any longer and end the memtest.
While writing this up it’s running for 12h54m.

Edit: and I feel bad for nagging about my laptop. Sure, it’s no gaming laptop but at the same time it’s by no means a bad machine. It does what I need it to do which is browsing the web and consuming media.

16h20m…although it might be weeks now. I can’t tell the difference anymore.
Every tik and tok drives the stake deeper into my chest, echoing in the nothingness inside me.
Every turn of the cogs tightens the chains that bind me.
When will this torture end? Or am I just having a nightmare and waking up will be the real torture?

Oh how I’d like to. But using Fedora on my laptop while memtest is running (not sure if I mentioned that, it’s been running for a few hours now) made me realize how many things I’d miss. Sure, you guys get around that with VMs and CLI but it’s just not convenient for me.

So…I might be a moron. I just noticed that my mobo reset the CPU OC when turned it off and on again so I could boot from the USB (regular restart was too fast and I couldn’t even read what to press to get into the boot menu), so now it’s doing memtest with the stock clock.
Does that matter?

Really shouldnt unless it changed memory settings

Never touched them so even with a BIOS reset the only thing changed is the CPU OC (from OC back to stock).

I’m at 20h11m now with 21 finished passes without an error (passes still running as I set it to 100).
This should be enough, right?
Should I run Prime95 after that?

Then I’ll switch back to desktop now.

Only thing that stands out are Errors regarding Directory-Services-SAM (ID 12291).

SAM failed to start the TCP/IP or SPX/IPX listening thread

And a bunch of errors regarding Service Control Manager (ID 7023)

The Interactive Services Detection service terminated with the following error:
Incorrect function.

Other than that only warnings that my ethernet connection got disconnected (when Windows startup but I have internet so…idk).
