nice to see that gaming on Linux is starting to get a lot more traction now and going mainstream, Linus is really pushing it as a viable option which is great because it really has come a long way.

Project Space Writing Report :
Chapter 4 is progressing well. It is kind of surprising to me how little dialog there is. The story is designed for and calls for that. The main character has been mentality breaking from the start. The story is also about what she does to stay in moment and work through her issues. It will get better but it is still several chapters away.

@wolfleben pointing back at the topic of DVD vs Blu Ray video quality, I ordered the Blu Ray version of Twin Peaks (S1+2+movie). The image quality - while still 4:3 - has really improved. The DVD version that I have has this warm, glowing look to it and while it’s not bad, it’s still low res.

Top = DVD from 2007 / Bottom = Blu Ray

It’t actually quite a good deal. ~23€ for the Blu Ray (S1+2+movie) vs also ~23€ for the DVD ā€œDefinitive Editionā€ (S1+S2.1+S2.2).

Since I found out there’s apparently a re-run of the show in 16:9 (and first getting excited, the disappointed, then glad again I bought the Blu Ray), how do you feel about old shows in new aspect ratios?

  • Original 4:3
  • Cropped to fit 16:9

In some cases shows were actually shot in 16:9 (or close to it) but framed for 4:3, so a remaster ion 16:9 wouldn’t mean they have to crop the picture. But there’s still the artistic argument that it was shot for 4:3 and everything outside was not intended to be shown in the picture.

I think it would depend on the show and whether it makes sense or not. if it were shot in 16:9 and your not losing anything from the original then sure why not but if you have to do extensive editing to make it work then I feel like it might just be better as the original in 4:3.

Just an example, but here’s what Showtime did with Twin Peaks:

4:3

16:9

4:3 for sure in that case. They even cut out the hand bit

ye in this case 4:3 is better, if your losing part of the scene just for the aspect ratio something is wrong.

The only case I know about where the director and camera team were thinking ahead was with Scrubs. They actually shot the whole show in 16:9 and cropped for 4:3.

In case of 4:3 shows I’m actually kinda glad I have a 16:10 monitor as stretching it doesn’t look bad.

If the show was filmed in 16:9 then definitely use that. However if it was only shown in 4:3 then also have the option to watch it that way.

If the show was 4:3, I’m against cropping it to fit 16:9.

It’s like saying ā€œwe had to cut some content out of the show so it wouldn’t be too big for streaming, the old, dusty DVD set has all of it, thoughā€.
That, and it looks weird when stuff is missing in each shot.

Chapter 4 is finished. I’ll start working on Chapter 5 later today.
Main character at the end of Chapter 4 is given a glimmer of hope.
