Apparently Alestorm plays power metal too.
tbh, I still can’t tell the difference between the different sub-genres of metal. Even rock sometimes.
I mean, unless it’s something obvious like glam rock/hair metal/industrial metal, etc
yeah Alestorm is power metal
Their subgenre would be pirate metal I guess, but their music is very much in line with power metal/folk metal
It certainly helps if you understand the history of metal.
Basically it started with Black Sabbath of course, then the first big shift would be the New Wave of British Heavy metal (a moniker I hate since it doesn’t really mean anything… Motorhead and Maiden are both in this group but sound nothing alike). And this is the first real split of what metal would become. There’s basically 2 branches overall: the Power, melodic, more traditional stuff and the Heavy, dirty, chugging riffy, dirty vocal stuff that stemmed from this.
One of the branches I guess would be getting into the glam/hair stuff, but there were also tons of bands (predominantly European) that loved what Iron Maiden did and expanded on that to go towards the Speed/Power metal route. And from there some added more folky/classical influences to create folk and symphonic metals.
In the US the response to glam was Grunge and Thrash and thus the quest for getting heavier was in full swing. From these we got things like death, metalcore, Black, etc. Basically the metal I don’t like.
nah, more like Stratovarius I guess. Seeing as I use a lot of the same scalar runs in my riffs as they do.
Alestorm are great. Saw them live once as part of a metal night thing.
Arkona
Alestorm
Turisas
Finntroll
and some others
That was a nice lineup for like 32€ although I only remember seeing the first 4.
Yeah that’s a very folk metal lineup. Folk is a subgenre of Power just utilizing a more… folk music sort of sound and less technical, classical sorts of arrangements.
To be expected at a gig like Heidenfest or Paganfest.
Alestorm and Turisas had a bit of a comedic thing going on between each other like some sort of rivalry which was pretty funny.
One of the things I love about that sort of metal is nobody takes it seriously. It always has some sort of comedic element because it’s so grandiose and over the top. But then they couple that element with some of the best musicianship and vocal prowess in all of, if not music as a whole then certainly, metal.
dont tell jethro tull about not takin folk seriously lel
lel mr flute is the og eltist prog master racer
While I only know 2 songs I find it refreshing that some people are experimenting with unusual instruments in genres. Without new ideas and inspiration it gets old real fast cause bands are only copying each other with only minor differences.
They can’t all do drugs and rock n roll until they die of old age. I mean, look at Ozzy.
ye but even the new young people lol
most of them are just crap anyway. feels like a lot of them were just picked off the street, dressed to fit a theme and then pushed and promoted by the record labels.
Like in the pop genre where every generation there are some archtypes that get renewed, like “we need a new Madonna, Cindy Lauper, etc”.
ye we need a trap spice grrls meme group
Now that you mention it I’m kinda surprised there isn’t already an all-trans group that’s been made popular by the media.
ye they got them korean boi bands that commit suicide and shit why not traps
we want equality damnit
drinkin some rums idk
I just remembered that there’s “some” shitstorm going on concerning WD drives being knowingly sold with a wrong pretense (SMR labelled as CMR). All those lists and paragraphs upon paragraphs made me a bit dizzy but fortunately someone took it upon him/herself to create a website for people to check if their drives are affected.
https://issmrdrive.com/
Fortunately mine isn’t.
And so are my 2x shucked WD80EZAZ.
I’m not using any of those for NAS purposes, so I don’t know how it would affect me if they were among those SMR drives.
Are any of you affected by this?
