So you mean something like what the steam machines were supposed to be like? iirc that was the general idea behind them. they can run a full linux desktop but also had big picture mode, Microsoft specifically might have a lot to gain from this if they decide to put Windows on the XBone. There first party games are already cross platform and iirc the Xbox is runs a modified Windows kernel and its all X86 so don’t see how it wouldn’t be possible.
I could actually see Microsoft doing something like this but my fear is that they’ll put Windows 10 S on the XBone to limit the games you can purchase and run on there platform.
Also this tastes exactly like what I think butterbeer would if it was a thing. Ik ik there’s the official branded one but that is horrible. Horribly horrible lol.
You could do that with the PS2, you just had to buy the HDD kit and install linux yourself.
You could also go a different route and dualboot Windows/Linux and SteamOS (if possible with Big Picture mode enabled by default).
By limiting the hardware choices you take away a huge part of the freedom we PC users enjoy, though (well, unless prices skyrocket for some reason). You could give the choice of different tiers and also make the game devs optimize their games for the different tiers (the game automatically recognizing on which tier hardware it’s running on and automatically selecting the suitable graphics settings).
I really really wanted the kit to do that. iirc it was hard to get ahold of outside of Japan but it seen some fairly good success there.
Sorta, SteamOS is literally Steam branded Debian so Windows/SteamOS would be a good combo but imo you should just run either Debian or Ubuntu if you wanted SteamOS as it has way better support.
