People with severe or untreated trauma are substantially more likely to develop an addiction. Most of the initial causes of addiction are related to depression, severe anxiety or low general life quality. There’s a lot of good research on the topic.

People will say or believe any thing to feel correct or justified in the decision, actions or purchases. Even if a individual knows they’re wrong they will convince themselves that they are the wronged party so that they themselves don’t feel bad. It’s the same principle behind fanboyism.

Maybe some kind of a forced routine to hang on to? Even though they don’t control over it (as those addictions have a tendency to cost a lot of money) they feel like they’re in charge.
