the main difference really is that on the old one you have to manually set up servers (like a normal server for any other thing).
EE it’s all streamlined and the game does it for you so i am sure there might be a way to force it to work as the base game is pretty much the same but the graphics are different (and theres some bug fixes in EE as well).

Welp looks like not. It has an entirely new network stack for the game and isn’t compatible at all with older clients.

Yep can see the reasoning behind wanting to change it. things have changed a lot since then and iirc the older netcode wasn’t the best at times.

Many games without a dedicated server that have “It just works” multiplayer usually use UPnP becuase otherwise you’d have to forward ports on your router which is what UPnP was meant to stop, the only thing I can find on EE multiplayer is if you run the dedicated server which has to have port 5121 open and accessible to the clients and nothing on the in-game multiplayer options.
