Planet Zoo is the first game in a very long time that looks good enough to pay full price for
My first impression of the Steam controller really isā¦itās interesting and weird.
The touch pads instead of a dpad and right analog stick are probably not very good for some games. Personally I find adjusting the camera with an analog stick in 3rd person view more precise.
The same goes for the dpad. The clicks are heavy and you donāt have the precision of a dpad. Definitely not the controller for sidescrollers.
I havenāt tried any first person shooters yet. Even though I wonāt play them (damn motion sickness) Iām at least curious how the touch pads are for mimicking mouse/wasd input.
The Steam controller has 2 additional buttons on the bottom (compared to the standard XBox, PS3/4, Nintendo controllers). So if you donāt like pressing the middle of the touchpad for L/R3) you can map them to those. Or any other key of a keyboard/mouse or even shortcuts for taking screenshots (just an example).
If you want to play strategy games on your couch or in bed without awkwardly balancing a mouse/kb this controller might be a valid alternative.
Oh, it also has a speaker inside that plays sound when you turn the controller on/off.
The vibration motors are very meh. Might as well deactivate them.
The controller itself feels both overengineered and cheap at the same time. The plastic isnāt as nice as on the XBO controller, at least the shiny parts that are gonna get scratched up in no time.
The way the batteries are stored and ejected is overkill. A very snug fit and to get them out again thereās a small lever on each side to press them out. Havenāt seen a mechanism like that and certainly not on a controller. No charging your re-chargeable batteries inside the controller, though (Valve isnāt really giving any info that unfortunately so I had to see what users are saying). But wired mode is possible.
The extension for the wireless dongle is also overengineered. While the XBox Wireless Adapter only comes with an extension cable, the Steam controller comes with the cable AND a little base thatās made of heavy rubber so the very light dongle stays where you want it (and doesnāt get dragged around by the cable).
Valve is definitely losing money when they sell them for 5⬠on sale. The packaging, the planning and engineering that went into the controller. Just look at this exploded view. Repairing it yourself seems like it would be quite a challenge.
I quite liked the Steam Controller. Was a little strange getting used to at first but it worked really quite well once you got into it, well that was before my brother throw it almost hitting my head while playing FIFA and completely shattered the controller XD
The consensus of most people seems that they are getting rid of old inventory possibly in anticipation for a Steam Controller 2. Valve have done a lot of great work with the Knuckles for the Index and could put some of the experience and technology into developing a new Steam controller.
I did that once with a PS2 controller. The moment it left my hand I already regretted doing it.
Better than drowning a GPU though.
So the Knuckles controller is not the Steam controller 2?
lol ye. I still canāt believe he managed to talked his way into getting a full refund for that though
Technically it is Valves second controller but it was more designed with VR specifically in mind. I meant something more traditional, thought I guess you could still use the Knuckles for none VR if you really wanted to.
Lemme rephrase that: so the Knuckles controller is not the official successor of the Steam controller?
No, they were designed as a controller for VR and not to replace the original Steam controller at all, plus to actually get full functionality out of them you need either the HTC Vive or Index Light Houses regardless or the tracking wouldnāt work.
So there IS a real successor to the Steam controller in the works?
no one knows for sure, its just speculation at this point.
might work but idk seems weird, like dont need analog for walking but thats the side with the analog, touchpad could work if the dpi/sensitivity is high enough you just never remove your finger outside spinning in a circle a couple times or something, then how accurate is it if its cranked up that high etc
other wise be like a touch pad a lot of lifting your thumb up and putting it back down probably
Typing with the pads is a weird experience. Iām used - when using a controller to type something - that I can only use the left analog stick and the A button to select the letter/sign/etc. But with the Steam controller - at least in Steam Big Picture mode - the keyboard is split and each pad covers one half. Then you move your thumbs individually and select the letters by pressing down on the pad until it clicks. Really weird but also kinda refreshing and certainly faster than using an analog stick.
but what if you had like ps4 with the chat pad?
dunno. never handled a PS4 controller.
man, Iām really craving some tendies right now. havenāt had any tendies/nuggies in a while cause McD and Iglo dropped in quality. same with the crispy chicken burger from burger king. last time I had one it landed in the trash cause it was still raw inside
should have got a refund
least here would be like you get your money back some one gets yelled at and you get a new free one with only 30% extra spit
what else do you use your goodboy points on?
Got it in a different part of the city to eat at home and didnāt really feel like going back there 30min and home 30min again.
Doesnāt matter. Itās close to midnight and like all stores/restaurants are already closed.
