I was looking forward to finally being able to test my grandfather’s old headphones…but the plastic got too brittle over the years and it just broke when I put them on :disappointed_relieved:

They don’t seem to be hard to find online and are cheap af (under 10€) but still…

The part of the plastic that connects the headband to those metal earcup-holders broke on the inside.

Now that I’m getting a bit into audio gear, looks like my grandfather was a nut for that too. The Hitachi HS-630 loudspeaker system is massive. Those would probably be fine if I could hook them up to an amp. But the amp is probably no good anymore (I think gear that old needs to be re-capped after that amount of time, and he bought the system ~40 years ago).
The 2 cassette decks and the FM tuner will come in handy though derp

Yeah most likely. luckily caps for those are cheap and old audio gear was built to last and for the most part are easy to work on as its all through hole.

That’s why I appreciate older stuff. Usually built like a tank, simple and cause it wasn’t riddled with useless features.

Speaking of build-quality: my grandfather used to drop every electronic device he bought from ~50cm onto the bed (I think even heavy CRTs). If it didn’t work after that or something rattled inside -> straight back to the store and got a different model from a different brand (after negotiating a discount).

So I have had an interesting day so far

Couldve been real bad but I controlled the car well enough for only having the bumper getting a dent lol.

Not 5 minutes after that there was a bigger crash in the same spot I spun out that totalled one of the two involved cars so that’s a thing.

damn that was a close call. glad your alright and only the bumper got hit.

I did some poking at the free version of bitdefender to see how good it is.

Free version does protect against malware and viruses. Also monitors web to keep you safe. You can turn off the being informed about deals on the paid for version.

Yeah I’m impressed the free version is pretty solid. I can recommend it with no problems. Avast though… no one should ever use that. It’s failed my poking way too many times.

Doesn’t that change every year anyway?
I think I remember a time was the go-to and recommendation over all the other anti-virus software. Then a year later it was Avira, then a year later it was…

You are correct it does change from year to year.

Part of my reason I don’t recommend Avast is cause: Resource Hog, injects code into your email, and false flags.

Granted they are small reasons.

Those are all among the reasons why I wouldn’t choose it as my anti-virus software…

On a different topic: don’t go down the audio gear rabbit hole…
And if you do, use some common sense, read up on the topics and don’t fall for snake oil.
Geez…what crap gets sold online for “improving the audio waves and sound quality” is unbelievable. And what’s more ridiculous is that there are people who fall for it.

Well audio is a game of diminishing returns. It can only get so good until you’ll either hardly notice a difference or start to perceive a difference that isn’t really there. The brain likes to play tricks on you and if they think its better it’ll sound better.

The crowd already splits there. What is “good”? What do people want from their audio setup?
And the “best” audio gear for clean, sharp, analytical sound is worthless if the recordings are garbage.
Just like the “best” DAC/headphone amp is worthless if you want to use it on the go with your phone.
Just like the “best” could also be just lots of power for the subwoofer in your car that will overshadow the mids and highs until you only hear bass.

Some stuff also seems to be veneered chipboard vs mahogany. Same purpose that only has “advantages” in specific environments, or if it’s “buy it for the longterm quality”.

Of course FLAC sounds better than 65kbps mp3s on my phone with the included earbuds.

FLAC mostly makes a difference for me in background noise and harder to hear stuff.

Also most people i know who buy high end audio equipment still use mp3’s they ripped from a CD 20 years ago
